The flora the corridor inherits.

Syria sits at the eastern Mediterranean edge — 3,077 plant species, 243 country-endemics, five bioclimatic zones, and 33 Important Plant Areas (IPAs) catalogued by Plantlife International. Two of the country's five priority sites — Anti-Lebanon and Jabal al Arab — frame the corridor's eastern and southern horizons. This is the ecological substrate the masterplan reads from.

01National overview

A country of five climates and exceptional endemism.

Syria sits at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Basin, forming an integral part of the Levant. 183 km of Mediterranean coastline, parallel mountain ranges, plateaus and semi-deserts — more than 60% of the country is plateau (200–600 m), with mountains between 600–2,000 m making up the remainder. Precipitation decreases from west to east and from north to south, governed by altitude, latitude, orographic shadow effects and distance from the sea.

33 IPAs have been formally identified in Syria, with a further 10 candidate sites requiring additional botanical research before confirmation. Sites span all five recognised Mediterranean bioclimatic divisions.

25 of 33 IPAs contain single-country endemic species. 27 of 33 contain very restricted steno-endemic species. 5 sites contain more than 20 single-country or very restricted-range species — a globally significant concentration.

Key Botanical Significance

Syria's local endemism is exceptionally high — even by Levant standards. Restricted-range endemic species occur in nearly every IPA. The country hosts centres of endemism for the Northern Levant (Kurd Dag), the only sub-alpine and alpine habitats in the Levant at Anti-Lebanon, and unique basalt habitat flora at Jabal al Arab. The genera Iris, Astragalus, Centaurea and Allium show the highest rates of endemism nationally.

02Flora & bioclimate

Five bioclimate zones, one transect.

The Syrian flora includes 3,077 species belonging to 133 families and 919 genera, the majority Mediterranean or Irano-Tauranian in affinity. Syria has approximately 243 endemic species; treated jointly with Lebanon (a historical convention), there are 330 endemic species to the two countries — around 8% of the joint flora.

Several IPAs straddle two zones — Kurd Dag (sub-humid → semi-arid) and Jabal al Arab (sub-humid → semi-arid) are good examples. The largest single grouping is sub-humid, reflecting the Levant's coastal plain and middle-altitude transition belt.

Altitude, latitude, orographic shadow effects and distance from the Mediterranean are the main factors that affect the climate; precipitation tends to decrease from west to east and from north to south.
03The 33 Syrian IPAs

Thirty-three sites. Five priorities.

All sites carry official codes (SY01–SY33). Seven are partially or totally protected. One — Hass-Jabbul — is a Ramsar site of international importance. Five sites are listed by the national expert team as top conservation priorities: Kurd Dag, Salma-Haffeh, Ghab, Anti-Lebanon and Jabal al Arab.

The Keturah corridor sits between Anti-Lebanon (immediately south-west) and the Damascus / Qassioun cluster — three IPAs on its eastern doorstep, two priority centres of endemism within an hour's drive. Of the five priority IPAs, three frame the corridor's wider biome: Kurd Dag at the northern end of the Levantine endemism axis, Anti-Lebanon immediately west of Damascus and the only Syrian site with sub-alpine and alpine habitats, and Jabal al Arab south of the corridor — a basalt massif at the intersection of two bioclimate zones.

Why Anti-Lebanon is exceptional: The Lebanese mountains create a strong rain shadow, keeping precipitation modest. Low temperatures and prolonged snow and frost enable sub-alpine and alpine vegetation to survive — habitats absent everywhere else in Syria. This isolation has driven intense speciation and produced the largest concentration of narrow endemics in the country. A further 50+ species recorded here are restricted to specific Syrian mountains or the Syria/Lebanon range.

Why Jabal al Arab is extraordinary: Mediterranean winds enter through the Golan-Galilee gap, causing the sub-humid and semi-arid Mediterranean zones to meet on this mountain. This climatic convergence at the junction of two bioclimate zones produces remarkable floristic diversity. Its basalt geology adds a further dimension — basaltic rock communities are nationally threatened habitats found here and at very few other sites.

The pressure ledger. What's eroding the IPAs.

The 2011 assessment ranks active pressures across all 33 sites. Two threats — unsustainable medicinal-plant collection and overgrazing — affect over 90% of Syrian IPAs.

Conservation note

The unsustainable collection of medicinal and aromatic plants is simultaneously Syria's most pervasive IPA threat and a potential conservation opportunity — plant collection supports local livelihoods. A well-designed sustainable harvesting programme could link plant conservation directly to community economic interests, providing both ecological protection and development benefit.

Seven of thirty-three. That's the gap.

Only 7 of Syria's 33 IPAs are partially or totally protected. Only 3 sites have active management plans (compared to 6 in Egypt and 2 in Lebanon). The protection deficit is most acute at Kurd Dag (zero protection) and Jabal al Arab (2%) — both priority centres of endemism.
